GOLDSBOROUGH, CHARLES, (great-grandfather of Winder Laird Henry, great-grandfather of Thomas Alan Goldsborough), a Representative from Maryland; born at “Hunting Creek,” near Cambridge, Dorchester County, Md., July 15, 1765; pursued an academic course, and was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1784; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1790; held several local offices; member of the State senate 1791-1795 and 1799-1801; elected as a Federalist to the Ninth and to the five succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1805-March 3, 1817); Governor of Maryland in 1818 and 1819; retired from public life in 1820, and resided on his estate near Cambridge, Md.; died at “Shoal Creek,” near Cambridge, Md., December 13, 1834; interment in Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery, Cambridge, Md.
